Association of Artist Managers’ Statement on UK Ticket Levy

15 November, 2024

The AAM congratulates British grassroots live music organisation, Music Venue Trust, for their hard work resulting in the news that it is now official policy in UK government that every ticket sold at an arena or stadium should contain a financial contribution that supports grassroots music venues, artists and promoters.

This is a huge development after years of advocacy work in this space.

We believe that similar action can be taken in Australia, where thousands of venues closed as a result of the pandemic, the numbers of which still haven’t returned to pre-Covid levels. APRA AMCOS reports in their ‘FY2024 Year In Review’ that average license fees are down 25%, leading to less performance opportunities and artists getting paid less.

A ticketing levy policy from larger venues to support small scenes, can contribute to a healthy ecosystem of artist development and growth that our entire economy can benefit from. Alongside this, the AAM continues to call for ‘Michael’s Rule’; a policy where every international artist that tours Australia has a local artist on the line-up.

Recent data released by Tixel, showed that 1 out of 3 event goers aged 18-24 attend 3-5 stadium or arena concerts per year. With this market in such a healthy position, it is perfectly poised to develop the local live economy through a ticketing levy and act as an IRL recommendation engine through Michael’s Rule.

We look forward to continuing conversations with our peers in the live music industry, and working together to maintain a healthy and sustainable industry for all.
